Families travel from far and wide for Southampton Christmas market

FAMILIES, friends and individuals have travelled from far and wide to visit Southampton’s Christmas market.

Having opened on Thursday, the market saw thousands visit the city centre at the weekend to enjoy its offering of food and drinks, as well as trying out the rides.

One family travelled from Bournemouth to visit the attractions.

Colin Burns, 40, and his partner Gemma brought their family on Thursday evening for the opening celebrations.

He said: “We came here today because when our baby was born four weeks ago, she was really sick.

“Now we’re celebrating our first Christmas with her and celebrating her life.

“My partner’s mum was with us last year as well but she died during Gemma’s pregnancy.

“Being here with the whole family (seven children between us) is beautiful.”

Meanwhile, Paul Mills, 54, visited from Totton.

He told the Echo: “I’m all for a bit of Christmas cheer and in the current climate I think it is more important than ever.

“It’s nice to have the Christmas market when it looked like it wouldn’t be going ahead.”

The Christmas market was originally cancelled in Southampton this year after organiser, Wela Markets, unexpectedly pulled out.

But after another company, S&D Leisure, stepped in at short notice to fill the gap, the popular attraction went ahead.

Another visitor, Emily White came to enjoy the festivities during the market’s opening.

The 27-year-old from Southampton said: “It’s great, I’m so glad we could have a market this year.

“There’s lots of nice food to try and the bar area looks lovely.”
